This Sunday at the Marvin Williams Center, our orchestra features a free concert of Music from the Movies and our very own Youth Jazz Ensemble provides a concert coda.
Experience the unforgettable power of Star Wars music—John Williams’s sweeping orchestral score that transports you to a galaxy far, far away with heroic fanfares, brilliant themes, and cinematic grandeur. The soundtrack is a timeless celebration of adventure, romance, and the magic of film music.
Saddle up for the stirring music of The Magnificent Seven—Elmer Bernstein’s iconic Western score that blends braying brass, sweeping strings, and rugged rhythms to evoke wide-open landscapes. We usually think of cowboys when we hear this but today, we celebrate the history Native Americans with classic pictures taken by Edward Curtis around 1900.
The pulse-pounding score of Mission: Impossible—anchored by its instantly recognizable theme by Lalo Schifrin—is the very definition of suspense and style. With its driving beat, sharp brass hits, and relentless momentum, the music mirrors the high-stakes world of espionage and daring stunts. Bold, sleek, and unforgettable, it keeps your heart racing and your senses on edge, proving that great music is the ultimate secret weapon in every mission.
The iconic music of the James Bond film series is the sound of sophistication, danger, and undeniable cool. Each theme blends lush orchestration with sleek, modern edge. Composers include John Barry (Goldfinger) and Paul McCartney (Live and Let Die). Sultry melodies and jagged phrases create an atmosphere of intrigue and excitement, making Bond’s music as thrilling as the world’s most famous spy himself.
Children will enjoy listening to and watching the intrepid and slinky Pink Panther.
The William Tell Overture, aka Theme from the Lone Ranger is music of heroic soldiers coming to the rescue on fast horses, many years before movies were invented.
Our concert will close with the Youth Jazz Ensemble performing well known Jazz standards under the direction of Derick Polk. Don’t miss it!
